Sainsbury’s shoot

Pretty vintage patchwork chairs

On June 30th, 2010 by Pippa Jameson.

I wanted to share these pretty chairs with you as they are certainly ‘of the moment’ with the strong ‘folk’ trend still going strongthe.  Each swatch of fabric has been carefully handpicked by the designer; Kelly Swallows.  I think this chair would look great as a statement piece in the livingroom or bedroom.  Kelly has just launched her website and is available for commissions.

Here is what Kelly has to say about hers designs-my chairs are individually sourced vintage pieces, each with its own unique charm. The personality of every piece is rediscovered by painstakingly and lovingly choosing an exciting collection of fabrics to create unique pieces with newfound splendour. The fabrics range from vintage to designer including  Kenzo, Zoffany, Liberty, Andrew Martin, Designers Guild, Osborne & Little, Lorca, Mulberry – an eclectic mix with exciting and surprising contrasts.

Eco watch: Benchmark lead the way

On June 13th, 2010 by Keinton Butler.

When most of us think about eco-friendly interiors or furniture, images of rough and ready recycled timber benches or coffee tables made from tree stumps often come to mind. It’s surprising that in this period of environmental awareness, most furniture manufacturers serious about sustainability still lack real design prowess, and sadly eco-friendly furniture is often overlooked due to its poor design – so what is an environmentally conscientious design lover to do?

Fortunately, there are a handful of furniture companies that are bucking the trend, producing stylish, environmentally sound furniture which is changing the way we think about sustainability in the home. Benchmark is one such company.

Since 2004 Benchmark has been collaborating with a team of top British designers including Terence Conran, Shin and Tomoko Azumi and Thomas Heatherwick to produce a range of domestic furniture which is expertly designed, sympathetic to current interior trends and manufactured to a high standard using sustainable materials and processing techniques.

A self-proclaimed ‘pioneer’ of sustainable furniture manufacturing in Britain, Benchmark’s sustainability credentials are impressive. They have both ‘Forest Stewardship Council’ (FSC) and ‘Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification’ (PEFC) certification, and have been awarded the ‘Queen’s Award for Enterprise’ in the Sustainable Development category (proudly the first furniture maker to win this award).

Benchmark’s commitment to sustainability ensures their manufacturing processes are environmentally sound, their furniture is made from certified timbers and locally sourced materials and they work with other suppliers that share their values.

Here is a small selection of their current range.

Bailey Table, A solid, clean lined table design made with Pippy Oak.

Alvis Armchair, Designed by Benchmark co-founder, Terence Conran.

Plank, A clever design by Thomas Heatherwick created entirely from one plank of wood.

Hexad Table, This table was created in collaboration with Rocket Gallery and Tomoko Azumi and won the Wallpaper* 2010 Design Award for ‘Best coffee table’.

Each item is handmade to order by craftsmen at their workshop in West Berkshire. You can purchase their range direct from their showroom or through the company’s website.

Sainsbury’s shoot

On June 11th, 2010 by Pippa Jameson.

I am feeling rather happy and inspired this week as I have been shooting again. I was offered a job that I really wanted to do and I thought as I’m back to work in 6 weeks I had better start saying ‘yes’ to work rather than giving it away to other stylist friends.
It was a promotional shoot for Sainsbury’s food. I had to prop for 15 food set ups; this included, plates, runners, cutlery, glasses, flowers etc…a lot of props!! Although it was really hard work it was soooo enjoyable. It might sound really corny but it made me realise how much I love my job and how much I had missed shooting. Great team to. The agency was DMB Mediaand the photographer was Kate Peters.
Here are a few pics from the day…

Bright summer accessories for the home

On June 2nd, 2010 by Elizabeth Danon.

Summer time is gradually seeping in, lets hope it makes it’s mind up soon! I suppose this has given me the time to think of ways to brighten up the home and garden regardless of the weather. I’ve been organizing my garden, in between rainy times, and am trying to use what accessories I already have to bring it to life.  These include my disco ball, outdoor white solar fairy lights and mirrors hiding behind the Ivy trails; I see it as creating another room in the home whilst adding depth and a magical feel in the evenings. Financially, we are still experiencing tough times but the shops have been stocking some great and affordable products to brighten up our daily living.  Below are are a selection of my chosen accessories that work inside or out!

Nordic House – Whitewashed Candle Logs

When I visited grand designs in London I also noticed the need for quality, natural products with bright splashes of colour and unique, fun design. Also a British theme is at the forefront along with luxurious mirrors and frames containing simple illustrated prints.

I adore these cute doggy doorstops which come in lots of different styles and colours, much better looking than a conventional doorstop; perfect for propping open your patio doors.

John Lewis – leather door stop dog The present finder – brit dog door stop

If you do not have a garden, why not bring the outdoors in with these simple planters for herbs and flowers.  Just pop them on the kitchen window cil and watch them thrive!

Nordic House – herb planters John Lewis – wall mounted herb rack

if you are lucky enough to have a garden, with two sturdy trees why not get a hammock! I wish I could have one but the trees in my garden are rather twig like.

Stylish Life – Hammock

A great idea if you live near a park or beach (luckily I do) why not get one of these really affordable BBQs, they come in a range of colours but my favourite so far is the blue.

Portable blue BBQ

Nordic House is a Scandinavian inspired design site who have a wide range of outdoor lanterns which add a light and classic touch. My favorites have to be the little glass hanging tea lights as they can be hung around the home or out in the garden.

If you’re heading the alfresco way, don’t leave home without a fabulous luxury hamper

John Lewis – luxury hamper

And finally Alpha art have these funky letters, big or small and fun to use on bookshelves or a great gift, I have a couple myself and plan to get more.
