Introducing Polly Hope

On January 26th, 2011 by .

I recently came across the work of Polly Hope and wanted to share it with you all as I am a big fan.  Her Eco freindly collection includes interior textiles, cushions, lamp shades, upholstered chairs and illustrations.  I think her choice of colours are spot on.  The style is decorative and feminine but has a very sophisticated feel due to her choice of subtle colours.  Her cushions would make a fantastic focal point on any plain chair, bed or sofa.  I am particularly drawn to the one below, uh oh,  I can feel a purchase coming on…(the only down side to this job is that when you see something you fall in love with you just HAVE to have it!)

Here is what Polly has to say about the collection: “The textiles are special because they are very Eco friendly, all organic cottons, peace silks and linens and the dying and printing is carried out naturally using herbal dyes and designed by me. I spent 4 months in India last year researching the right factory for production, it was important for me to know the people I was working with and make sure the whole production process was sustainable and  the workers were treated fairly.”  Click here to see for of her work and her contact details.  She also publishes a gorgeous blog – good work Polly!

Beautiful homeware from Marimekko

On January 25th, 2011 by .

I must admit I have a slight obsession with Scandinavian design at the moment! I  recently stumbled across the work of Finnish design company ‘Marimekkoafter some research into my Nanna’s beloved dining set that I have coveted since about the age of 10! Little did I know that this well established design company has been producing a wide range of items for the home since 1951 including bedding, fabrics, dining, wallpaper and more – all beautifully original and timeless in their design.

If you are a fan of these pieces, you will be pleased to hear that all discontinued items are now on sale through distributor finnstyle.com

Beautiful feature: Homes & Gardens, February 2011

On January 24th, 2011 by .

I wanted to post this feature from the current issue of Homes & Gardens (February 2011) as it’s so pretty.  It shows various  colourways using a soft ‘blush’ palette. Sometime you come across photography and styling that really really stands from anything else – well done H & G, lovely article…

Students to style the windows at Heals flagship store!

On January 18th, 2011 by .

From Monday January 31st until Sunday February 6th 2011 the UCL Slade School of Fine Art will return to Heal’s as part of Artists in Residence 2011 with 11 artists taking part in the inspirational project over 7 days.

For one week only students from the prestigious Art School will take up residence in the windows of the flagship Heal’s store on Tottenham Court Road to create original and limited edition artwork and installations.

Heals launched this project last year to celebrate their bicentenary and it was thoroughly well received. It has the potential to showcase the talents of the students and also to lead to future collaborations.  I think this is such a great idea and an incrediable opportunity for the students

One particular artist, Alex Springer who took part in the project when it launched last year, is this year creating 6 handmade working cameras from homeware products found around the store including a Brabantia bin which customers will be encouraged to use to either take a photograph of themselve or of a product from around the store (image below).

Joseph Griffiths (image below) is creating large scale 3D laser cut butterflies Joseph will produce an installation in the window covering the walls, ceilings, floor and window.

Sophie Blagden (image below) will be modifying ready made sculptures found in second hand stores Sophie will be working live within the window with her work exhibited on plinths as each piece is complete.

Student Cansu Aladag will be creating a large scale hand knitted structure using walking sticks as knitting needles, which will cast off in-store and progressively continue to suspend across the front of the store between the columns.  She will also be hosting small workshops to teach customers how to knit so that they can help her complete the unique installation.

There will also be a workshop by Poppy Whatmore who will be producing model fantasy furniture.

Heal’s hopes to create the same excitement as last year, encouraging customers to take part and be involved in the process of seeing an original piece of art being created.

I think it will be well worth a visit…!

PJI styling update

On January 10th, 2011 by .

‘Juggling’ has to be the optimum word since I have been back in the office! Whilst  I am extremely grateful for all the work, I may have a break down along the way- only joking ;0) I just need to go bed a bit earlier!

I am working on the pitch for Grand Designs which has been so much fun to do.  It’s not quite there yet so it’s going to be a late one in the office tonight. I will post my moodboards once we know the outcome.

We are shooting for Warren Evans at the end of the week which I am really looking forward to and next week we are looking at some locations for The California Shutter shoot in April, another shoot that I  am very excited about.

In terms of the blog, we are interviewing now for an online Editor who can basically run the site, follow up all of the business leads that we receive as well as developing content and commissioning.  Hopefully we will be able to introduce our new contributor soon…

Upcycling by Weckner Design

On January 10th, 2011 by .

Whilst we are all loving the fashion for clever ‘upcycling’, I thought I would post some great pieces of work by a company called Weckner Design. They are a Glaswegian based furniture company who’s objective is to redesign old, discarded furniture to create unique, sustainable and functional design (up-cycling).

Each retro piece has been lovingly created using a wide variety of materials with a slight Scandinavian feel.  If there is a particular object that you are looking for then just make an enquiry as they also offer a commissioning service.

You have to love the ethos behind up-cycling as in today’s throwaway society it’s great that we can prolong the life of an object rather than it becoming part of a landfill

Vintage style chinaware decorated by hand

On January 7th, 2011 by .

How gorgeous is this collection! Each piece has been lovingly decorated by Designer Victoria Connolly AKA ‘Dolly Plops’.  I have featured some of her work before as I love the bright colours that she uses.

The collection below includes, tea pots, teacups and saucers, coffee cups, milk jugs and egg cups.  I think my favourite has to be the pale pink tea pot with the rose design.  I would love to have my girlie friends round for tea and cake and then produce these!!  Best of all they are all hand designed so no collection is exactly the same.

For more information about the pieces or to place a commission email :[email protected]

COMPETITION: Win 2 Signed copies of George Clarke's 'Home Bible'

On January 6th, 2011 by .

This competition has now closed – congratulations to our winner Mick Stewart

Funonthefloor.com is a fantastic resource for anyone planning home improvements, with interior design ideas and practical advice on everything from planning and fitting, plus a wealth of style inspiration for using carpet. Fun on The Floor has teamed up with Pippa Jameson Interiors to offer a book giveaway that will not disappoint!

The book is by George Clarke, Channel 4 presenter and architect who has recently joined Fun on the Floor’s panel of experts to help people make the most of carpet. George, who presents Channel 4’s The Restoration Man and The Home Show, guides you through your house, room by room, looking at everything from loft conversions and side-return extensions to en-suite bathrooms and utility rooms so you can realise the full potential, and value, of your home.

What did I think of the book….I have to say, I have read a lot of home improvement books but none of them are quite like this or go in to as much detail, it’s fantastic.  In the first chapter; ‘My Home Story’, George talks about his step by step experience on his own home renovation.  Having never published images of his beautiful home before, he gives us a complete insight into the project including before and after pictures as well as the ups and downs of the process and difficult design decisions that he had to make.  Best of all, he talks about how style the rooms once the building work was complete. The finished result is absolutely stunning.

There are 5 further chapters; Your Home Profile, which looks at all types of houses including terraced, semi-detached, detached, apartments, bungalows and the orientation of your home.  It addresses standard and problematic layouts and then offers solutions with visual diagrams – very handy if you are planning a renovation or house move.

The final 4 chapters; How to draw, Space and where to find it, Room by room and Resources are jam packed with advice on everything including extensions, designing rooms, costing and planning renovations and finding the tradesman to make it all happen!

We have two signed copies of this book to giveaway to one lucky winner. All you have to do to enter is visit www.funonthefloor.com and answer the following question:
