The story of Charles & Ray Eames

On July 2nd, 2012 by .

Last week I was invited to the private screening of ‘Eames The Architect & The Painter‘, at Vitra’s Clerkenwell office. The film was so engaging and I learnt so much about Charles and his devoted wife, Ray. Perhaps best remembered for their mid-century plywood and fiberglass furniture, they also turned their hands to splints for wounded military during World War 11 (which became the catalyst for the iconic moulded plywood ‘Lounge’ chair) as well as photography, interiors, multimedia exhibits, graphics, games, films and toys. I had no idea they were so heavily involved in the IT industry, designing marketing strategies as well as short films. Their most powerful and memorable film has to be Powers of 10, which has been a major influence for many filmmakers over the years. I also discovered that Ray Eames played a far bigger role in the company than I had previously realised, she had a huge influence on not only the introduction of colour to their furniture pieces, but was also responsible for the Art Direction of countless photoshoots, known and loved for her knowledge of style and perfection, Ray was key to their worldwide success. You can purchase the DVD of this screening here.
