Embracing the trend of Fluro, Dulux introduces ‘Collective Passion’ , their second collection from a series of five for 2013 . With punchy splashes of neon orange, red, pink, yellow and green, this collection is all about building on colour, much like a piece of artwork. The palette is then harmonised with pale neutrals for the floor and furniture, using polished and highly reflective materials.
It’s refreshing to see new paint techniques, which move away from painting a room with just one colour. Whilst it is still popular to create a feature wall, this is decorating on a whole new level! I love the second from last image with the grey sofa; the colours on the wall have been applied in painterly layers, this draws the eye up, and by using accessories in the same tone the look is pulled together.
To mirror this look, be creative with the application of paint, consider using panels of colour that graduate in intensity (look at the bedroom below for an example of this technique) add interest to long corridors by layering strong and fiery tones such as pink and orange. Treat your walls like a large canvas, feel free, and try to have some fun, although do plan out your colours before you begin. A good idea is to paint a scaled down version on a large piece of paper, that way you can test your scheme before you commit to painting the walls.

Having just come back from Interiors UK , I had the pleasure of visiting Pitfields Pop up shop and cafe (and sampling one of their blueberry muffins – very good!) Attracting the creative and curious and based in the heart of Shoreditch, Pitfield London is an eclectic emporium of beautiful, unique and attention grabbing homewares. At the show, they managed to create a stylish and homely space using lots of their signature pieces, including enamel teapots, mugs, vintage floral chinaware, chunky knit throws and brightly upholstered furniture items. The cafe and seating area was simple yet creative. Marked out with bright yellow steel supports, the area was busy and colorful. Up-cycled apple crates were padded out with large blue glitter cushions and for the seating area, shipping boxes had been stacked together to create several vintage looking breakfast bars, but to top it all off, they had a £7,000 copper octopus suspended over their product display! (see image below). If you are in the Shoreditch area any time soon, I strongly recommend a visit to their shop where you will discover vintage finds, designer wallpapers and carpets, reworked furniture, inspiring gifts and much more…

We are always looking for room schemes that can inspire, and help us make those all important decorating decisions. The images below are taken from the first of Dulux’s five paint trends for 2013. First up is ‘The Art of Understanding’ which sees 50′s influence from the catwalk, film and TV, all of which are set to make a big impact on interiors in 2013. Pippa Jameson Interiors first wrote about this in 2010 with our feature ‘50′s Interior Trends 2010/2011‘. We predicted that this was going to be big, and we were right.
I am a big fan of this collection, and used correctly, the colours will create character and depth. The key is layering, and using accents of colour, rather than painting a whole room in one shade, which is what we have been used to. I love the first image where just the window cils have been painted with deep pink (90RR 18/450) By doing so, they become defined and several focal points are created around the room. This technique particularly suits this loft style flat, as from above, the borders are viewed as solid blocks of colour creating a more dynamic and confident look. The pink frames are then balanced with the introduction of cushions in similar tones. The secondary colour is deep blue, which adds a striking contrast. The look has been finished with a cream highlighting colour, which lightens the scheme.

I attended Home 2013 at Earls Court yesterday and came away feeling inspired by some beautiful products. There were lots Swedish, Norwegian and Danish exhibitors, feeding our passion for all things Scandinavian. The soft furnishings and textiles were awash with illustrative prints and geometric shapes (check out Mini Moderns backgammon prints), amongst all of this was a LOT of bright colour, the whole exhibition floor was alive with bursts of vermillion, mustard, yellow and cobalt blue (I am sure you are sick of me talking about these colours by now!) The kitchen accessories were either loud and proud (Rice) or simplistic and organic (atelier tete is a good example).
A few people that really stood out to me were Thelermont Hupton and Kauniste, Serex Maison d’etre, Ferm Living, String, Italesse, LADP, Jielde, atelier tete, Design House Stockholm, Another Country, LSA, Jessica Hogarth (Confessions of a Design Geek bursary for Home) and Rice.

Have you ever revamped an old chair? As trends change, the furniture we once loved can suddenly look ugly, dated and very shabby, which is exactly what happened to my set of dining chairs (image below). My husband was insistent that we took them to the skip, but I had other ideas ;0) Nothing gets skipped in our household until I am sure it can’t be up-cycled, free-cycled or painted! On this occasion it was an up-cycle procedure.
I had some gorgeous mustard fabric left over from a fashion shoot, and so I thought I would have a go at re-upholstering (similar fabric found here). I would like to point out at this stage, I have never re-upholstered a chair like this before, but seeing as nearly every household owned one just like this in early 2000, I thought it only right to have a go. You now have the option of bringing yours into the 21st century…!
You will need
- A chair
- Staple gun
- Scissors
- Gloves (if you have a lot of chairs to do as it helps to protect nails)
- Fabric of your choice, it needs to be fairly thick
- Cut out a rectangular panel and drape it over the back rest , leaving about 3 inches all around the edges.
- Push fabric ends into the crease, where the seat meets the back of the chair.
- Pull the fabric taught at the sides and top to create a smooth appearance. Now staple down the sides and top to fix this panel in place (don’t worry too much about neatness as this will be covered, it’s just important to pull the fabric tight!)
- Now cut a seperate piece of fabric to cover the back panel, leaving about 3 inches around the edges.
- Start at the top and fold the fabric in on itself, then staple. Next do the sides, keeping the fabric taught at all times, leave the bottom hanging down.
- Pull the bottom panel down tightly and turn the chair upside, then staple it to the underneath of the chair.
- Take care to make neat folds at the corners (see image ref).
- Cut a square large enough to cover the seat and again, tuck the fabric in to conceal the ends.
- Pull the fabric taught at the sides, turn the chair upside down and then tuck the fabric under to make a neat edge.
- Staple all around keeping the fabric taught, making sure the staples are nice and neat.

I cannot tell you how exciting it is when a shoot you have styled, is finally published. The following images are from ‘Cook on a Shoestring’ the second book by the very talented chef, Sophie Wright. We worked on this project in 2012 with Kyle Books, and one of my favourite photographers, Jemma Watts. The book design was by Laura Wousson. This was such fun to work on and a real contrast from the job before - Asda’s Christmas shoot!
Sophie’s book (which is available through Amazon now) has received some fantastic press. The recipes are achievable, quick to make and above all, tasty (I can vouch for this as we sampled each one on the shoot days!) I have cooked quite a lot from the book now, most recently the Slow Roast shoulder of Lamp for NYE – delicious! Well done Sophie – it was a pleasure to be involved x

I absolutely love this collection by Sian Elin, inspired by Scandinavian style with Moorish and Mediterranean design influences, the patterns and colours she encompasses are right on trend for 2013; graphic shapes, repeating patterns and strong blocks of colour including; vermilion, mustard and grey, all of which are strong for the coming year. The collection features bold hand drawings which combine colour and pattern together beautifully. Sian says her inspiration for the collection came from Moorish architecture which she saw while travelling throughout the Mediterranean, and you can clearly see those influences coming through. For an ‘on trend’ look, combine Sian’s cushions with a soft grey or classic mustard sofa (similar to my shoot with Heart Home Magazine which you can see at the top of the page).
