Trend watch: raw pastels and bold stripes

By

Following on from my previous trend watch post, here are some more looks that were present at the S/S 2017 fashion shows.  Some were around last season but back in a slightly different tone, like the bottom trend, which is similar to colour blocking with a more subdued palette.

Vogue call the first look Babydoll Girl but that sounds a bit girly for me. Think pale pinks, grey and white teamed with natural materials such as marble, wool and the odd flash of copper or brass. The styling is as all in the detail such as button back chairs or headboards, the marbling pattern in the marble or perhaps the finish glaze on ceramics, it’s this texture that adds a little depth and interest to the scheme. Earlier this year I styled a brochure for Next Home (image below) and this sums it up pretty well, yes it’s feminine but it’s not overly girly, the use of raw materials such as marble, wood and metal, keep the look sharp and contemporary.

Farrow and Ball recently launched Peignoir which ties in nicely with this trend

As mentioned above, this look is reminiscent of colour-blocking but reincarnated with a different palette, this time around these bold stripes are more muted.  The most popular combo is black, white and red (which is a little bit 60’s) this outfit from Prada is a good example and even has a little seventies thrown in for good luck, or this one.  I think my favourite is this 70’s feel outfit below from La Redoute, I am sure we will see these designs printed on cushions in the not too distant future.
