Life of a stylist

Styling for DFS

By

I was recently asked to do some styling for DFS called ‘My Happy Place’ a campaign where 2000 consumers were asked, “what makes the perfect living room?”. Based on their results, I was given a (pretty strict) brief to translate the findings into an actual room. We started the set-up with the Keswick corner, as a contemporary style sofa was the most popular choice. We then moved onto the walls, and it seems that only a small minority of us (including me) love dark walls, as the overwhelming response was a request for neutrals.  I was a little sad to hear this but at least it’s not magnolia!  For that reason I chose the ever favourite Cornforth White, which leans more towards the grey/putty side, rather than an orange or yellow based white.  Cornforth is a good foundation colour for adding more neutrals or layering up with a little colour.

A panelled wall, artwork, plants and side tables were also on the wish list but unsurprisingly, it was cosinesss that was key.  Creating a space that felt warm and welcoming with lots of cushions and throws. We have a huge (faux) fur on our sofa at home which gets used all year round, usually with the whole family trying to get underneath!

We used some brass and marble pieces which are (just) in favour although this will soon be replaced with more sustainable materials such as rattan, cork and bamboo. Finally, I added a few touches of colour of the moment, terracotta, forget grey, blue and green, this little beauty will soon be everywhere…

Multi-functional rooms were popular and that’s no surprise, whether we bring work home or simply work from home, rooms need to allow for flexibility.  It may be that you don’t have the space for a separate office, or simply want to be with the rest of the family while you are on a deadline. Either way, bureau’s and console tables make a great alternative to a desk.
