Trend: Futuristic Interiors

On April 22nd, 2013 by .

‘Futuristic Interiors’ was the subject of my trend prediction article, which I wrote for a magazine back in June 2012,  almost one year on, we are starting to see this forecast come to light.  Below is a copy of my original article, along with snapshots  from the two magazines who covered the story at the weekend.  If you want to see the full version of my article click this Zest Media link and go to page 55.

My article
Think clean lines, teamed with soft organic shapes on a backdrop of white; and this is the futuristic look that is becoming a firm favourite with designers around the globe.  Fashion collections for Spring/Summer 2012 saw world renowned designers, dressing their models with ‘space-age’ clothes and alien inspired hairstyles, whilst architects and interior designers are having fun with white sci-fi style spaces, teamed with splashes of punchy neon.

“Futuristic Interiors continue to gain momentum as consumers interpret them as cutting-edge and ahead of competitors. Businesses that can incorporate minute elements of sci-fi style will automatically be more likely to be perceived as innovative and effective at pushing boundaries.” Armida Ascano, Trend Hunter.

One designer that is known and loved for producing this style is Pierre Paulin, with his best example being the Ribbon chair, created in 1966.  A beautiful sculptural design, which takes on the appearance of a spaceship and from the 1960s to the present day, has never ceased to be modern.

At a time when everyone is watching the pennies, it is no surprise that we are embracing a refreshing and simplistic style, which is not only achievable but also affordable.

Get the look

Kitchen
For a space-age look, combine curved units in a white gloss finish with bright LED cabinet lights, a great way to illuminate and display modern kitchenware.  Extra drama has been created by hanging a contemporary pendant light over the work surface.

Living room
A graphic feature wall has been created with a white cubic shelving system, a stark contrast to the soft textures of the rug.  The stylish angular chairs in slate grey and mustard make a confident statement whilst adding warmth.

Wall art
Graphic furniture has been combined with a unique and innovative, colourful decorative motif concept. Each piece is bicolour (double-sided), and comes in a choice of 3 options. Whether placed on the ground, fixed to a wall (a wall fixing system is supplied with each pack) or suspended from the ceiling via 2 rails (priced separately), they produce a unique tri-dimensional effect that is reminiscent of flying saucers!

Dining room
The white furniture in futuristic shapes work well together, with wave plates and ribbon style chairs, the look has a soft fluidity about it.  The lighting has been carefully considered with a delicate ceramic pendent suspended directly above the dining table.

Bathroom
The organic shape of the bathroom unit has been mirrored by this vermilion colored stool.  It’s a great example of simple design with dramatic impact.

Furniture
Clean lines, geometric shapes that often take on the look of a spaceship; a good example is Ligne Rosets Pumpkin chair.

Lighting
Often made from new materials and structures, futuristic lighting has a firm place within modern interiors, lighting up and transforming any contemporary décor.

Wallpaper
Futuristic wallpaper along with graphic geometric shapes, has been trending for a few years.  It looks most effective hung on one wall to create a stylish focal point.  Sanderson have just launched a range called Concord, a graphic design in a range of colour options.

Sunbury Antiques Market (Kemptons)

On March 3rd, 2013 by .

I am often asked where to shop for antique or vintage finds and the answer is Kemptons (Sunbury Antiques Market). Opening at 6.30 am, this is a full day out as there is so much to see. You will find a mixture of gems including; antique furniture, gold and silverware, jewellery, ceramics, kitchenallia, vintage and vintage fashion, garden ephemera, clocks, paintings, cameras books and much, much more!  Not only does the market attract those interested in the Antiques trade but also to general collectors, prop buyers, interior and exterior designers.  I haven’t found anywhere else that matches its diversity. My favourite London antiques market is Alfies, London’s largest indoor market for antiques, vintage, collectables & 20th century design.

In my experience, the most popular items that people tend to go for are ‘old skool’ chairs, armoires, mirrors, armchairs and lighting.  Below are just a few pictures from the markets gallery.  I love the cute wooden shoe fillers below, we used some similar vintage items in a shoot we did a few months back – take a look as it may give you some ideas…

A few tips; Sunbury Antiques Market is very busy and as you will be on your feet all morning, it might be best to go with a packed lunch, a decent amount of cash so that you are ready to do a deal, and finally, a large van, as you will need to take your purchases away with you.  Also, if you are buying furniture, make sure you have taken measurements of how big the item needs to be.

A few facts: the market has been running for over 30 years and is now recognised as one of Europe’s premier antiques markets. It  attracts well over 700 stallholders with 350 stalls throughout the indoor halls and over 350 stalls (all on hard standings) in the  outside drive in area. PARKING AND ENTRY IS FREE at Sunbury Antiques Market!

Introducing: St Aidan's Homeware Store

On December 3rd, 2012 by .

I am always on the hunt for new and exciting interior finds, so when this email popped into my inbox, I had to share it with you.  Launched by Joe McIntyre, the previous Art Director of Coast magazine, St Aidan’s is an online homeware store selling a collection of quirky and cool finds. Having had a life long passion for interiors, when Joe was faced with redundancy, he this felt like this was the right time to fulfil his dream of a homeware business.

“I set up St Aidan’s as a place to help source those quirky, cool finds that help give our homes a bit more personality. There’s some great Bloomingville products in the store as well as original works from artists and ceramists along with some fantastic vintage finds.”  Be sure to take a look at his site as I am sure you will love the collection as much as I do.

Weekend Wish List...

On September 28th, 2012 by .

It’s the end of another busy week and time to swoon over some gorgeous homeware. I’m LOVING both pieces by Hugo Passo.  First we have the IVEY, an oak plywood magazine holder, designed so that you can view your magazines like 12″ vinyls in a record shop (very cool), also by Hugo is this lemon yellow Piet side table, the leg structure is made from solid walnut and the matt lacquer tops are available in yellow, red, black, blue & white.

The cute rug is designed by the Internationally renowned fabric and wallpaper company Harlequin, the new & hip brand called Scion have drawn inspiration from mid-century modern and Scandinavian looks (the animal print makes it very on trend) the same rug design is also available in mustard #like.  If like me, you have a bit of a light obsession (most design addicts do) then I am sure you will appreciate the delicate nature of this piece, inspired by Japanese origami, ’Paper Lights, is folded from 1 piece of “butterfly paper”and is supplied with a porcelain bulb socket. Finally, we have this old skool satchel, available in one of the most fashionable colours right now, the ‘Manderin’ is part of a new collection by Bohemia

The gorgeous work of La Corbeille

On September 13th, 2012 by .

Launched in 1997, La Corbeille Editions makes fun and contemporary products for the modern home.  I remember seeing their work at Maison & Object in 2011 and fell in love with the personality of their pieces.  A particular favourite of mine is the aptly named ‘Favourite Things’ Pendant light, taking a classic shaped pendant and adding an element of the unexpected. The light perfect for any room in the home, including a child’s room!  I have a bit of a thing about stools and the Tabouret Stool by Jocelyn Deris is just so cute!  It even has an attachment that turns the stool into a coffee table.  For more information on La Corbeille visit their website and for a UK supplier try Made in Design.

Weekend Wish List...

On September 6th, 2012 by .

As Friday is nearly upon us, below are a few of my favourite things for my Weekend Wish List!

I have been on the hunt for some original factory lights for some time and stumbled across these from a Czech arms factory.  I love the mix of industrial pieces combined with something new, modern and shiny such as these Pik vases from Aram. The dining is from the wonderful Homebarn, a beautiful chunky reclaimed pine table with a breadboard end and A frame legs. My choice of chair is from the new House collection at John Lewis, a modern, affordable and stylish collection for the home.  Finally, I love the quirky design of this little bird, so cute!

Weekend Wish List...grey & yellow

On July 13th, 2012 by .

Hello lovelies, continuing with my obsession of grey and mustard, I’ve put together the following colour scheme.  I am a big fan of armchairs and chaises in the bedroom, as it’s good to sit and unwind in a room other than the lounge, the chairs below look so comfortable; the perfect place to loose yourself in a good book. The bold rug is on trend, echoing our love for all things geometric, whilst the carafe and lighting are Scandinavian by design.  Last but not least, I am in love with this Lazy Days bed – #want!

Lazy nights bed, B&B Italia,  Armchair, Chauffeuse easy chair by Piero Lissoni for Living Divani, Concentric rug, Niki Jones, Bogart ceiling light, John Lewis, Art, Illustrated Poems, Parler Seul. Uno Carafe & tumblers, LSA

The new John Lewis - in Stratford

On August 30th, 2011 by .

There is just under two weeks to go until John Lewis unveil their new Stratford store, but as you might expect from an Olympic site shop, this is going to something completely different… Image credits: Clements Riberio, ercol cabinet; Bottles Blue cushion, James Joyce; Ikat print cushion,  Ikat Broadstripe chaise, Seattle Chaise, Adras Indigo all Ptolemy Mann;

There are many elements that make this new Home store exciting including collaborations with designers that are completely new to John Lewis.  One that I am really excited about is the vintage boutique brand, Pedlars.  As well as their signiture pieces, they will be offering reconditioned 1950s telephones, original London bus blinds, vintage 1960s bread baking tins sourced from the Hovis factory, along with 1960s lamps, maps, and globes.

Customers will also see a new focus on design-led, directional products, particularly in furniture and lighting.  One particular designer lighting brand will be Design House Stockholm, a firm favourite of mine, you might know them for their ever popular and gorgeously stylish Nordic Light.

There will be a section dedicated cushions, wallpaper and fabric by Jocelyn Warner, a new dining range from Bethan Gray for John Lewis, and fabrics from Mulberry Home.  The area will see a new installation by the renowned stylist Emma Davidge, her concept is inspired by Tibetan flags, and uses long drops of John Lewis fabric to create a breath-taking entrance to the Home floor showcasing the array of fabrics available.

Other collaborations include Original BTC and Modernica, as well as designers Clements Ribeiro, James Joyce and Ptolomy Mann (images above).

Another service will be from Image library guru, Getty, where customers can customise a range of art and photography to suit their own requirements – altering the print size and frames to suit their taste.

Finally, there will be a Home Design service offering customers a design consultation in-store or at home.  Customers will also be able to pick-up swatches and samples, browse interiors magazines and books, and speak to one of their interior design-qualified home designers.

The official opening will be on September 13th 2011

On August 17th, 2011 by .

Whilst searching through their new Summer/Autumn collection I wondered to Anthropologies’ house and home section – where I was left positively giddy over the eclectic beauty everywhere to be seen. What great feature pieces these would make.
