There is just under two weeks to go until John Lewis unveil their new Stratford store, but as you might expect from an Olympic site shop, this is going to something completely different… Image credits: Clements Riberio, ercol cabinet; Bottles Blue cushion, James Joyce; Ikat print cushion, Ikat Broadstripe chaise, Seattle Chaise, Adras Indigo all Ptolemy Mann;

There are many elements that make this new Home store exciting including collaborations with designers that are completely new to John Lewis. One that I am really excited about is the vintage boutique brand, Pedlars. As well as their signiture pieces, they will be offering reconditioned 1950s telephones, original London bus blinds, vintage 1960s bread baking tins sourced from the Hovis factory, along with 1960s lamps, maps, and globes.

Customers will also see a new focus on design-led, directional products, particularly in furniture and lighting. One particular designer lighting brand will be Design House Stockholm, a firm favourite of mine, you might know them for their ever popular and gorgeously stylish Nordic Light.

There will be a section dedicated cushions, wallpaper and fabric by Jocelyn Warner, a new dining range from Bethan Gray for John Lewis, and fabrics from Mulberry Home. The area will see a new installation by the renowned stylist Emma Davidge, her concept is inspired by Tibetan flags, and uses long drops of John Lewis fabric to create a breath-taking entrance to the Home floor showcasing the array of fabrics available.

Other collaborations include Original BTC and Modernica, as well as designers Clements Ribeiro, James Joyce and Ptolomy Mann (images above).

Another service will be from Image library guru, Getty, where customers can customise a range of art and photography to suit their own requirements – altering the print size and frames to suit their taste.

Finally, there will be a Home Design service offering customers a design consultation in-store or at home. Customers will also be able to pick-up swatches and samples, browse interiors magazines and books, and speak to one of their interior design-qualified home designers.

The official opening will be on September 13th 2011
John Lewis

With the change of seasons upon us and perhaps a need (or rather want!) to update your space with a new look, why not try some of the following ideas using fabric that a) wont break the bank and b) give some satisfying DIY results.

Wall Art

If you have seen some terrific fabric and are not sure where it might fit into your home, why not have it professionally framed as an art piece or stretch it yourself over a canvas? Florence Broadhurst, Marimekko and Missoni are examples of timeless designer fabrics that could act as a stand out feature piece that will certainly add that wow factor to your bare walls. (Image 1 – Meghan’s own photo)

Table Wear

A DIY table cloth or table runner is a great way to liven up your mealtime table with fabric you know you love. Buy enough of your favourite print or colour fabric in a cotton or hefty acrylic blend the length of your table to create your own runner or table cloth, for any season. Left over fabric can used to create matching napkins, napkin rings or even placemats. (Image 2 – Meghan’s own photo)

Décor for the Kids

A fun way to incorporate fabric into a child’s domain is a sail or indoor tent in a corner of the room. Use different cuts of fabric such as checks, plain and floral fabric stitched together for a playful look and tie it to anything that will make a cosy cubby. It can be used for quiet time, reading and general times of play, adventure and imagination!

Sew triangles of any sort of printed and colourful fabric, connect with string, wire or ribbon and hang on a door or wall. Image (4) from http://kiddley.com

Nestled well off the beaten track on the Isle of Jura {west coast of Scotland}, Jura Lodge is a luxury retreat for whiskey aficionados, writers & guests alike. Not the easiest of destinations to reach; it will take a minimum of two planes and a ferry, but once you land on this small Hebridean island, you’ll realize why authors such as George Orwell came here to write.

Jura Lodge – originally The Old Distiller’s house – has been transformed by Paris based, American interior specialist; Bambi Sloan, into a shabby chic, vintage inspired luxurious getaway. Sloan’s quirky display of colour, décor and stylistic touches runs throughout the house; from the curios filled glass cabinets, to the white suit of armour & relics from the past. The White Room {the biggest bedroom} has fresh white walls, antique French linens & lace, ornate mirrors & a central Victorian roll top bath with panoramic sea views. Each room is decorated in it’s own unique style; but ultimately following in Sloan’s creative, eccentric manner.

From the pictures you can see that the decadent interior offers a playful & humerous touch with the collection of trinkets and vast collection of deer antlers. The attention to details is exquisite & appropriate to the rich history on the Isle of Jura, which Sloan took great inspiration from. Unique features include a writers chair made entirely from deer antlers, the kitchen fridge that originated from a Brazilian cafe in the 1950s, and a large bass drum coffee table in the sitting room.

Activities such as shooting, hunting, fishing, fell walking, lobster eating, sailing and whiskey drinking can all be organised upon request.

You can hire on a room-by-room basis but availability is limited – costs start at £625 per room per night for a minimum of three nights. “Trust us, it’s worth every penny” – Jura Lodge Diurachs.

Below are some of my favourite ‘cabin living’ inspired accessories and interiors of the moment. I know this trend has been around for a while now, but I love it!

It appears that creatives around the globe have opened their doors to the friends of the forest, with looks featuring cute woodland critters such as owls, deer and rabbits and earthy timbers in warm tones. I love how this style can be both fun and elegant, whilst inviting the outside in! I especially like the white ceramic animals from Have You Met Miss Jones…

This competition has now closed – congratulations to our winner Mick Stewart

Funonthefloor.com is a fantastic resource for anyone planning home improvements, with interior design ideas and practical advice on everything from planning and fitting, plus a wealth of style inspiration for using carpet. Fun on The Floor has teamed up with Pippa Jameson Interiors to offer a book giveaway that will not disappoint!

The book is by George Clarke, Channel 4 presenter and architect who has recently joined Fun on the Floor’s panel of experts to help people make the most of carpet. George, who presents Channel 4’s The Restoration Man and The Home Show, guides you through your house, room by room, looking at everything from loft conversions and side-return extensions to en-suite bathrooms and utility rooms so you can realise the full potential, and value, of your home.

What did I think of the book….I have to say, I have read a lot of home improvement books but none of them are quite like this or go in to as much detail, it’s fantastic. In the first chapter; ‘My Home Story’, George talks about his step by step experience on his own home renovation. Having never published images of his beautiful home before, he gives us a complete insight into the project including before and after pictures as well as the ups and downs of the process and difficult design decisions that he had to make. Best of all, he talks about how style the rooms once the building work was complete. The finished result is absolutely stunning.

There are 5 further chapters; Your Home Profile, which looks at all types of houses including terraced, semi-detached, detached, apartments, bungalows and the orientation of your home. It addresses standard and problematic layouts and then offers solutions with visual diagrams – very handy if you are planning a renovation or house move.

The final 4 chapters; How to draw, Space and where to find it, Room by room and Resources are jam packed with advice on everything including extensions, designing rooms, costing and planning renovations and finding the tradesman to make it all happen!

We have two signed copies of this book to giveaway to one lucky winner. All you have to do to enter is visit www.funonthefloor.com and answer the following question:
