Below are some fantastic examples of adding bright pieces of furniture.  If you live in a home with a neutral colour palette, this makes the perfect backdrop for introducing splashes of vibrant furniture such as dining chairs or a sofa.  You can see below how well these orange chairs work within this white kitchen.  Not only do they make a statement but they also bring personality and style to the room.  The same applies with the lime green sofa and chairs.  Although the sofa is not to my taste, you can see how successful the scheme is.

To provide you with some colour inspiration, we are excited to present the predicted colour trends for 2010, carefully selected by the experienced ‘Trends Panel’ at Crown paints. The innovative colour palettes represent directions that the panel believes will be key for interiors this year.

Terra

The earthen hues of the natural world with a striking contemporary twist. A bold palette of warm oranges and burnt reds complimented with greys, purples and dusky pinks, resulting in a truly modern look.

St Germaine

As the name suggests, a colour palette inspired by timeless Parisian style. Think strong, monochromatic shades, teamed with elegant, rich detailing. A sophisticated twist on the baroque themes of last decade.

Simple Beauty

Reflecting one of the hottest trends right now, this theme touches on sustainability, craft and tradition. Experiment with neutral shades and accents of green and purple.

New Mexico

A fresh take on a classic theme inspired by the hot hues of the Mexican desert. Burnt oranges, yellows and dusty taupes feature, with accents of greying whites and midnight blue.

Paperback

Taking inspiration from a well-thumbed novel, this colour palette is based on comfortable, familiar pastels, teamed with the freshness of olive green and yellow.

Plush

Decadence encapsulated. Create drama at home with an intense colour palette of rich purples, and an eclectic mix of textured homewares.

As a stylist I thought it would be helpful for me to advice on how to put the above look together-or at least know where to begin!  I think this scheme would look great either in an outdoor courtyard area or for a bedroom or living room.  I understand that it might be a bit radical to paint your living room bright turquoise so what I would suggest is to pick one of the lighter hues from the  paint swatch moodboard (the cappuccino colour would be great).  Then introduce the bright Southern Folk colours with the accessories.  Below are a selection of homewares from Graham & Green that would all work with the Southern Folk  scheme: Twin set colorful Peacocks, Moroccan Leather Pouffes, Embroidered cushions

As the new Arts & Design Contributor for Pippa Jameson Interiors, I will be reviewing the leading design shows and reporting my findings on the blog.   My first review was for 100% Design London, the contemporary interiors and architectural event which showcases and celebrates the best of British and international design at Earls Court each year. 100% Design London exhibits new products from UK based manufacturers, as well as British designers collaborating with international brands, and is the biggest event during the London Design Festival.

So what interior trends did we see at the fair this year?

The key trend dominating the fair was sustainability, and the use of natural, raw materials. Although sustainability is now a perennial theme, this year there was a clear focus on smarter, more sophisticated, sustainable products and materials. A move towards contemporary products with a handcrafted feel, and a rejection of harsh minimalist or industrial finishes and forms.

In furniture and lighting design, there was a focus on unusual combinations of traditional materials. Gritty terracotta was used with glossy glazed ceramic, concrete used with timber, cork with painted aluminum, leather with hessian, glass with cotton. The eclectic mix of materials created an exciting and tactile result. This was best illustrated by Benjamin Hubert’s Chimney pendent lights, and his concrete and plywood Heavy Desk lights.

Materials were used in their purest forms. Natural materials creating warmth, and metallic or glass finishes adding an occasional touch of opulence. Demonstrated here by these hand blown glass pendent lights by Rothschild & Bickers.

With such a heavy focus on craftsmanship and materials, the overall structure and design of furniture exhibited was not especially innovative or new. Instead designs were clean, safe and familiar, with many brands borrowing from the past.

On interior surfaces, the decorative trend continued, with textured and patterned detail applied to everything from wallpaper to CaesarStone bench tops. Award winning designer, Erika Wakerly showed some beautiful and innovative wallpaper designs.

The busiest stands at the fair included the online lifestyle store Charles and Marie, British duo Thelermont Hupton, the Blueprint Awards stand, and the Eyes on Spanish Design stand, which focused on emerging Spanish designers.

With an impressive 3 day program of seminars and over 500 stands spanning four shows,100% Design London is gaining in both size and popularity. Although it is many years from being serious competition to other European interior design fairs (such as the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan and Maison&Objet in Paris), 100% Design London is building momentum and credibility, mirroring the growth of the design industry in the UK.

If you are selling or renting your home then try and make sure it looks up to date with the latest decor.  You don’t have to go crazy and re-decorate your whole home as little touches here and there will do the trick.  I know you have heard it a million times but it is best to keep the look simple.  Stick to neutral colours for the walls and just add interest with your accessories.

The stylish paint colours and accessories above are from B&Q and are very affordable.

Accessories: You can update the look of your home with fairly inexpensive accessories.  Hide away all of the clutter and then add simple key touches.  A bookshelf or coffee table could be transformed with a simple table runner and a few ornaments.  The pretty accessories below are from Wilkinson and start from just £6. 

Try not to use more than a few co-ordinating colours and materials otherwise it will look too busy.  Once you’ve cleared away all the clutter invest in a few plants and flowers as they always brighten up a room.   I would suggest buying decent fake flowers so that they last the duration of the sale.  The plant below is £49 from Marks & Spencer.  It may be a little expensive but it is a great fake and remember it will last for years-this would look great in the middle of a coffee table.

Update a plain old sofa with a set of bold cushions from Graham & Green. At the top end of the budget Marks and Spencer’s sell some lovely embroidery designs for £35 or if you want to go super trendy then opt for their metalic sequined style for just £15…I love them! Remember, you can take all the items with you to the new home so see it as an investment. 

For value cushions  try BHS or B&Q.  If you have a very old fashioned sofa that makes the house feel dated then think about covering it with an extra large throw; this is a much cheaper option than buying a new sofa.   If you have a particularly dark house then invest in some up lights and make sure these are on when you conduct a viewing.
