Trend: Colonial charm

A a stylist, I am always drawn in by beautifully detailed and authentic sets. I take delight in absorbing the way a room is designed and always appreciate the styled accessories sitting on side tables, as well as photos and paintings on walls, all of which are there to help tell the story. I get quite excited when a trend lends itself to getting really authentic to time honored pieces, and Colonial charm does just that. With its wonderful imagery of travel, merchants and sense of discovery, it combines earthy tones and raw materials like rattan and linens, with vintage travel wares with scientific curios for an eclectic and spontaneous ‘set up camp for the night’ kind of feel.

I reveled in the chance to create a mood board to inspire an interiors setting and explore for myself all the lovely imagery conjured up by colonial times. Humid days spent in the shade discovering new creatures, the soft lull of palm frond fans, and adventure in the jungle waiting on your doorstep.…

Stylish Christmas table setting

I have certainly noticed that Christmas is becoming more personalised and crafty from year to year. The possibilities of how you decorate and style your dining table, gift wrap and trees are endless and provide you with opportunities to take the time to enjoy more than just the food and presents! I recently stumbled across this image of a gorgeously designed Christmas spread, which successfully combines rustic, contemporary, earthy, romantic and beachy styling. Bold & Graphic trend shoot

This is our latest shoot that is now on Channel 4 Homes. Unless you have been away for all of 2011 then you must have noticed the ongoing trend for all things bright and graphic. It’s a certainly a striking scheme and not for the faint hearted. To recreate the look, use a graphic image for your background and pick out one of the colours for your bright piece of furniture.

It must be my editorial background as I always like to see my images layed out as a spread! I’ve included the larger versions below. I hope you like it ;0)

Original needlecraft books from the 1950′s

Hello everyone, I’m afraid it’s been a while since my last post as I have been out of the office for a while, but I’m back and now and have some fantastic posts coming up.

I was in the middle of sorting through some bits at home and whilst doing so, I came across these original needlecraft books from the 1950′s; there seems to be a vintage theme on my blog at the moment! They belonged to my grandmother, who was crazy about needlecraft, and I think they’re fantastic. The front cover of the first image is especially interesting as 50′s interiors are so fashionable, people are paying a lot of money to buy original pieces like this; especially the sideboard. The 1950′s paint swatch card is from Erwinhouse, I thought it would be interesting to see all the colours together. Most of them are a bit heavy for my taste but I am a fan of the Chelsea gray, I could see this one amongst the Farrow & Ball colours.

Anyone up for spending a day at the races? It’s all racing carnival fever at the moment in my corner of the world, with bold colour adorning the track and fillies alike. Here is my mini moodboard of equestrian styled pieces to get you in the mood…

Trend: Bright & Graphic

All things bright & graphic, this is the next big trend that is slowly filtering it’s way down to the interiors market. I don’t know if you remember, but we published a trend story on graphic and digital prints last year when it was popular with fashion. Brights is something that has been around for a while but now it’s being combined with graphic prints, also look out for bold and crazy illustrations on textiles and furniture; there are going to be some shocking designs coming your way, here is a good example of what I am talking about, this a great piece in the ES by Barbara Chandler. Major retailers and independent designers such as Zoe Murphy are at the forefront of this look. Zoe, takes ordinary pieces of furniture and adorns them with cool illustrative images and transfers using a bold and clashing palette of pink, red and orange, I am a huge fan of her chest of drawers (image below). Another favourite of mine is Rachel Gornall, who makes hand dyed stitched textiles. I saw her work at Origin this year and it was simply stunning. Then of course there was the Anthony Hartley chair at LDF, that everyone was talking about. Anthony’s work is so current and best of all every multicoloured piece has its own unique colour sequence, its DNA, which is authenticated and registered to its new owner, my favourite piece is the Edna 1, it has the bright multi colored drawers but with a simple wooden casing – ‘Like’ The chairs are from Emeco, handmade from 80% recycled Aluminum. Apparently it takes 77 steps to get there but it means that they are designed to last for 150 years, that’s some promise!

Skulls galore!

The skull is an internationally recognized symbol for death and mortality; a sign of warning and the fragile nature of life. It’s cultural context varying around the world. It can be a sign of solidarity and unity for the outcast tough guys; pirates, Hells Angels and even Nazi’s. A connotation of melancholy for Shakespeare and his contemporaries. A symbol for the Mexican holiday, Day of the Dead. Or even an Elizabethan emblem for bawds, rakes and prostitutes that would be worn as rings. Which ever way the skull has been depicted over the years, it has become an icon in itself.

In recent years the skull has escaped it’s sinister association to become a thing of beauty. The late Alexander McQueen revitalized and re-introduced the skull to current popular fashion in the early 2000s. The provocative skull imagery sweetened with bright colours and silky fabric sent fashionistas wild, itching to get their grubby hands on his skull-jacquard silk scarfs or Britannia skull clutch bags. Damien Hirst furthered the lust for skulls and proved his status in the arts world with ‘For the Love of God’ – a diamond encrusted platinum skull that sold for a spine tingling £50 million! Damien Hirst’s diamond skull became hypermodern and Dwell quickly copied, making an affordable diamante encrusted skull statement centerpiece for the home – it’s no pocket change at £199. Skulls, bones and even organs have been transformed in to a variety of house hold pieces in materials that you’d never expect. Below is my pick of the best anatomically inspired home-wares.

Trend: Colour blocking at home

A firm trend on the runways for the past year is colour blocking; a trend which I would love to also see being experimented with in interior styling. The key to success with this style? Keep the combination to 3 or 4 bold, pure colours paired with a neutral for some grounding. The results are an explosion of vibrancy! I like that this look can be adapted to just a corner study if you wanted or a whole living area if you were really brave! It’s a minimal look that also lends itself to the introduction of prints and other personal pieces. A few images below for inspiration…
