Embracing the trend of Fluro, Dulux introduces ‘Collective Passion’ , their second collection from a series of five for 2013 . With punchy splashes of neon orange, red, pink, yellow and green, this collection is all about building on colour, much like a piece of artwork. The palette is then harmonised with pale neutrals for the floor and furniture, using polished and highly reflective materials.

It’s refreshing to see new paint techniques, which move away from painting a room with just one colour. Whilst it is still popular to create a feature wall, this is decorating on a whole new level! I love the second from last image with the grey sofa; the colours on the wall have been applied in painterly layers, this draws the eye up, and by using accessories in the same tone the look is pulled together.

To mirror this look, be creative with the application of paint, consider using panels of colour that graduate in intensity (look at the bedroom below for an example of this technique) add interest to long corridors by layering strong and fiery tones such as pink and orange. Treat your walls like a large canvas, feel free, and try to have some fun, although do plan out your colours before you begin. A good idea is to paint a scaled down version on a large piece of paper, that way you can test your scheme before you commit to painting the walls.

We are always looking for room schemes that can inspire, and help us make those all important decorating decisions. The images below are taken from the first of Dulux’s five paint trends for 2013. First up is ‘The Art of Understanding’ which sees 50′s influence from the catwalk, film and TV, all of which are set to make a big impact on interiors in 2013. Pippa Jameson Interiors first wrote about this in 2010 with our feature ‘50′s Interior Trends 2010/2011‘. We predicted that this was going to be big, and we were right.

I am a big fan of this collection, and used correctly, the colours will create character and depth. The key is layering, and using accents of colour, rather than painting a whole room in one shade, which is what we have been used to. I love the first image where just the window cils have been painted with deep pink (90RR 18/450) By doing so, they become defined and several focal points are created around the room. This technique particularly suits this loft style flat, as from above, the borders are viewed as solid blocks of colour creating a more dynamic and confident look. The pink frames are then balanced with the introduction of cushions in similar tones. The secondary colour is deep blue, which adds a striking contrast. The look has been finished with a cream highlighting colour, which lightens the scheme.

“Celebrating the aesthetics and order of the fifties reminds us of less complicated, more glamorous times” as quoted by the Dulux Trend team.

It’s one week to go until Halloween which means it’s time to start planning the party! Don’t think that the dressing up and decor is just for the kids, we’d like to think our shoot below is tastefully set up for both! The photographer on this shoot was Jemma Watts and the stylist was myself. We used a selection of 3M products for hanging items on the wall. Happy Halloween!

4 Tips for creating a Halloween themed party!

Think about where you are going to be entertaining friends and family, this set-up would work perfectly well in the kitchen, dining room or living room, as all you need is a table for food/sweets and a wall/ceiling to hang accessories. There are so many fun Halloween pieces to choose from when it comes to decorating your space, we chose items such as lanterns as they’re fun and add drama to the room.

Once you have decided on your items, you’ll need to work out which Command products would be most suitable. For our Halloween lanterns, we used the small decorating clips from Command; they are perfect for most Halloween decorations and novelty string lights.

Our Halloween board is a fun addition to the wall; you could always use a chalkboard and write your own Halloween menu or cocktail menu for the adults! To hang it on the wall, we used the clear medium hooks from Command. Before you hang anything from the hook it is important that you check the weight that it can hold by looking at the front of the packet. This hook can hang up to 2 pounds, or 900 grams.

The small newspaper bags are a quick and easy way to create some fun props for your party and best of all, they are made from recycled items. Using an old newspaper, cut out a rectangle shape, then fold it over and stick the side and bottom, cut up strips of black paper and fill up your little bags leaving little spikes sticking out of the top. To attach them to the wall or desk then we would recommend the poster strips from Command, they are also great for attaching unframed pictures or photos to your wall.

Last month, I worked on a great shoot with photographer Jemma Watts, looking at creative ways to display pictures and home accessories, using a selection of 3M’s Command products.

When it comes to wall displays you don’t have to stick to conventional set-ups, think about what you are hanging and try to have a little fun. Our styled collection has a retro feel, with most of the items having been up-cycled or restored. We started by painting the wall in a rich grey, this created the perfect backdrop to the punchy reds and bright mustard. It may not be your obvious choice for the wall, but this demonstrates that with the right light and accessories, slate grey can look striking and above all, warm.

My favourite item is the handmade peg rail which has been made from old yard sticks, genius. We used the Command picture hanging strips to attach it to the wall, just make sure you check the weight of the products against the back of the Command packet. All products wall are from the fabulous Home Barn, they sell a mixture of home accessories that have been lovingly restored and transformed into very cool and individual pieces.

The start of the year is always a very promising time for freshening up and welcoming in the new – and that is exactly what the team at LifestyleBazaar HQ have been doing! The new year has been a very busy one, with not only a fab new look to the shop floor but an extension and refurb to the basement. This entire new floor has lead to a larger selection of high quality, affordable and most importantly, interesting and individual designs to the LifestyleBazaar catalogue.

The design duo behind LifestyleBazaar, Chris and Laurent go above and beyond to bring the best selection of products for the home that you won’t find anywhere else! Originally based in Nice, South of France they relocated back to London five years ago, bringing their eclectic mix of design and decorative homewares to Shoreditch. The store holds a mix of styles, well known brands and new designers – all offered at fantastic prices. Some of the brands at LifestyleBazaar include Leitmotiv, Virebent, iBride, The New English and Mode Design to name but a few.

Next time you’re in London I highly recommend a visit to the LifestyleBazaar store to explore the gorgeous products on offer. Or, if you can’t make it to the shop browse the extensive website by clicking here.

At the beginning of the year I moved into a new home that could only be described as a granny flat. It’s previous occupant was a seventy-something with a fondness for pond green swags, beige everything and rhubarb pink. It’s new occupant however is a twenty-something with a love for interior decoration and modern, if slightly quirky, design. So, as you can imagine I’ve been very busy with various DIY projects as I re-vamp my flat, room by room. The first room I decided to decorate was the living room and I wanted to do so with grey paint.

I decided that I would go with just the one feature wall (pictured below) as not to drown the room – even though it is a very light room thanks to the large bay window and high ceilings. The shade of grey I chose to go with was Bowler Hat Grey from the Dulux Classic’s range, painting the rest of the walls/features in a simple Brilliant White, also by Dulux. Dulux Classic’s are lovely shades and pretty much - in my eyes - on par with Farrow & Ball’s chalky soft paints. When I started painting I was unsure of how I was going to tackle the shelves and the surrounds so I thought I’d take it step by step. I have to admit, I am not a fan of built in shelves and cupboards; I don’t like their shape or their lack of flexibility. The obvious answer was to rip them out but that currently is not an option, so I have to live with them and hopefully try make them disappear.

Before…

When I arrived at the above stage I did not feel comfortable with the outcome, it did not look right. The white frame around the shelves looked prominent and fussy, which definitely was not my plan! When using dark or strong colours it can be a bit daunting making bold decisions, so it’s always helpful to get the opinion of another. Obviously my first point of call was to Pippa! I emailed her a few pictures and asked her opinion on what I should do… paint everything grey, paint just the surround, paint the shelves, paint everything including the cupboards??? Pippa confirmed my feelings and suggested I paint the surround and shelves grey, but paint the cupboard white. And thats exactly what I did (see below) and I think it looks great. The fireplace pops out, the fresh white paint looks sophisticated and most importantly, the shelves appear merged and subtle!! I also think my collection of accessories look great against the grey – especially the coloured items… well I think they do anyway.

After…

This is the stunning work of Gill Wilson, a designer I came across at Origin 2011, I remember walking past Gills stand and being totally struck by the beauty of her pieces.

Gill Wilson produces handmade paper using natural plant fibre as the raw material for architectural and interior schemes. The pulp is hand dyed to produce a palette which ranges from the most subtle natural tones to full colour saturation.

As each new season draws near, I eagerly await the catalogue of my current favourite design house, Citta Design. This savvy, New Zealand based company always manage to get it right. This week, I enjoyed flipping through the pages of their Spring/Summer range for 11/12. Their Cuban inspired collection ties together the warm neutral tones of last season with the freshness of warmer days to come. Let’s just say, I have a few items circled and added to my wishlist….
Their Cuban range is coming soon to the Citta Design website and new blog!
