Trend: Futuristic Interiors

‘Futuristic Interiors’ was the subject of my trend prediction article, which I wrote for a magazine back in June 2012, almost one year on, we are starting to see this forecast come to light. Below is a copy of my original article, along with snapshots from the two magazines who covered the story at the weekend. My article
Think clean lines, teamed with soft organic shapes on a backdrop of white; and this is the futuristic look that is becoming a firm favourite with designers around the globe. Fashion collections for Spring/Summer 2012 saw world renowned designers, dressing their models with ‘space-age’ clothes and alien inspired hairstyles, whilst architects and interior designers are having fun with white sci-fi style spaces, teamed with splashes of punchy neon.

“Futuristic Interiors continue to gain momentum as consumers interpret them as cutting-edge and ahead of competitors. Businesses that can incorporate minute elements of sci-fi style will automatically be more likely to be perceived as innovative and effective at pushing boundaries.” Armida Ascano, Trend Hunter.

One designer that is known and loved for producing this style is Pierre Paulin, with his best example being the Ribbon chair, created in 1966. A beautiful sculptural design, which takes on the appearance of a spaceship and from the 1960s to the present day, has never ceased to be modern.

At a time when everyone is watching the pennies, it is no surprise that we are embracing a refreshing and simplistic style, which is not only achievable but also affordable.

Get the look

Kitchen
For a space-age look, combine curved units in a white gloss finish with bright LED cabinet lights, a great way to illuminate and display modern kitchenware. Extra drama has been created by hanging a contemporary pendant light over the work surface.

Living room
A graphic feature wall has been created with a white cubic shelving system, a stark contrast to the soft textures of the rug. The stylish angular chairs in slate grey and mustard make a confident statement whilst adding warmth.

Wall art
Graphic furniture has been combined with a unique and innovative, colourful decorative motif concept. Each piece is bicolour (double-sided), and comes in a choice of 3 options. Whether placed on the ground, fixed to a wall (a wall fixing system is supplied with each pack) or suspended from the ceiling via 2 rails (priced separately), they produce a unique tri-dimensional effect that is reminiscent of flying saucers!

Dining room
The white furniture in futuristic shapes work well together, with wave plates and ribbon style chairs, the look has a soft fluidity about it. The lighting has been carefully considered with a delicate ceramic pendent suspended directly above the dining table.

Bathroom
The organic shape of the bathroom unit has been mirrored by this vermilion colored stool. It’s a great example of simple design with dramatic impact.

Furniture
Clean lines, geometric shapes that often take on the look of a spaceship; a good example is Ligne Rosets Pumpkin chair.

Lighting
Often made from new materials and structures, futuristic lighting has a firm place within modern interiors, lighting up and transforming any contemporary décor.

Wallpaper
Futuristic wallpaper along with graphic geometric shapes, has been trending for a few years. It looks most effective hung on one wall to create a stylish focal point. Sanderson have just launched a range called Concord, a graphic design in a range of colour options.

Have you all had a chance to see French Connections latest Homeware for S/S 2013? After the successful launch last year, their latest collection doesn’t disappoint. It’s all about texture and raw materials combined with a faded coastal palette of soft white, light greys and oatmeal. Expect to find pale and interesting ceramics with a hand finish appeal, textiles in denim, jersey and linen, and furniture with a painted and weathered look. I love it all! Introducing: St Aidan’s Homeware Store

I am always on the hunt for new and exciting interior finds, so when this email popped into my inbox, I had to share it with you. Launched by Joe McIntyre, the previous Art Director of Coast magazine, St Aidan’s is an online homeware store selling a collection of quirky and cool finds. Having had a life long passion for interiors, when Joe was faced with redundancy, he this felt like this was the right time to fulfil his dream of a homeware business.

“I set up St Aidan’s as a place to help source those quirky, cool finds that help give our homes a bit more personality. There’s some great Bloomingville products in the store as well as original works from artists and ceramists along with some fantastic vintage finds.” Be sure to take a look at his site as I am sure you will love the collection as much as I do.

I can’t believe it’s been 3 weeks since my last post!! I have been feeling so anxious that I haven’t be able to write anything! This is the problem when a big job comes in, radio silence on the blog…Anyhow, I’m back (until the next shoot!) and wanted to share with you some of the gorgeous products from all of the Spring/Summer 2013 press shows; starting with the lovely Laura Ashley.

All of the images below are from the Bloomsbury range, a pattern originally launched in 1987 and adapted to todays trends. For me, this was the collection that stood out the most at the press show, it’s colorful, fresh and exciting and is sure to be a hit. Away with the beige and in with the colour!

Beach shoot for Heart Home Magazine

As the weather becomes colder and the winter coats come out, we are all turning towards our cozy home accessories. It’s all about knitted cushions, large cable knit throws mixed with a few of your favourite things. This is exactly what we used in my last shoot for Heart Home magazine which was shot at the end of the Summer. Our main focus was texture, combining the chunky textiles, reclaimed woods with soft petrol blues; just look at the beautiful colour of the thistle! Mr J Designs, is a furniture and product design company based in North Wales, who sell a small selection of unique and stylish items. I wanted to include the working drawings of the products as it’s fascinating to see someones design process, from an idea right through to a prototype and then the finished article. The design below is called ‘Sideboard ‘ from the Smith Range and it is one of my favourites. The colored panels and pale wood make this a very on trend piece. Mr J Designs also offers a bespoke furniture design service.

Which bed to buy?

Whether you are thinking about buying a solid wood, metal or maybe upholstered bed frame, it is important that you choose carefully and spend time comparing styles and prices; after all this will be one of the biggest investment purchases for the bedroom. If you are designing your room from scratch then the bed can be a good starting point for the rest of your scheme. For example, if it is shabby chic French look you are after, opt for an upholstered bedstead in faded greys, creams or blue and team this with weathered furniture and painted floorboards, finish the look with faded french linen bedspreads and a droplet crystal chandelier. For a classic French look then visit La Maison on Shoreditch High Street, London, they have the most beautiful antique bedsteads, mirrors and armoires. For antique lighting, try The French House. If it’s a sleek and modern finish then B & B Italia has some very cool and individual pieces, I absolutely LOVE their Lazy Nights bed, combine this with a tri-pod or cord lamp from Design House Stockholm and faded wooden furniture from Hay, if it’s a Scandi look that you are after. Or, consider high gloss cabinets and dressing tables from Camerich for a minimalist feel. For mid-range prices, look at Raft for their classic reclaimed bed frames and Camerich again for their simplistic and modern style (it is a more affordable B&B Italia or Ligne Roset).

Weekend Wish List…grey & yellow

Hello lovelies, continuing with my obsession of grey and mustard, I’ve put together the following colour scheme. I am a big fan of armchairs and chaises in the bedroom, as it’s good to sit and unwind in a room other than the lounge, the chairs below look so comfortable; the perfect place to loose yourself in a good book. The bold rug is on trend, echoing our love for all things geometric, whilst the carafe and lighting are Scandinavian by design. Last but not least, I am in love with this Lazy Days bed – #want!

The story of Charles & Ray Eames

Last week I was invited to the private screening of ‘Eames The Architect & The Painter‘, at Vitra’s Clerkenwell office. The film was so engaging and I learnt so much about Charles and his devoted wife, Ray. Perhaps best remembered for their mid-century plywood and fiberglass furniture, they also turned their hands to splints for wounded military during World War 11 (which became the catalyst for the iconic moulded plywood ‘Lounge’ chair) as well as photography, interiors, multimedia exhibits, graphics, games, films and toys. I had no idea they were so heavily involved in the IT industry, designing marketing strategies as well as short films. Their most powerful and memorable film has to be Powers of 10, which has been a major influence for many filmmakers over the years. I also discovered that Ray Eames played a far bigger role in the company than I had previously realised, she had a huge influence on not only the introduction of colour to their furniture pieces, but was also responsible for the Art Direction of countless photoshoots, known and loved for her knowledge of style and perfection, Ray was key to their worldwide success.
