As ever with interiors, we see constant parallels with the world of fashion. You can guarantee that what you see on the catwalk will ultimately filter down onto the high street, albeit a few seasons behind. We saw this happen with colour blocking, coastal style and utilitarian design, the list goes and will continue to do so.

I know flowers and design have been around for decades, but ‘modern florals’ have bigger and brighter flowers with a more painterly feel, great for companies such as Designers Guild, who are one of the best when it comes to pattern. I have picked out a few images from the catwalk and high street, including Next and House of Fraser, who have both mastered the look, but first, a few hints and tips on how to pull the look together.

The key to any successful scheme is balance, not too much of one thing, if you are going to go crazy with a busy pattern, you will need to calm the look down with plain blocks of colour. My advice would to pick one large area for your floral pattern, this could be your large furniture pieces such as the sofa or armchair or, it could be your walls. Then, pick a few colours from the pattern and use these for the rest of the room scheme. Below is a good example of this rule. You can see that the beautiful vermilion colour (pinky/red) has been used for the chair, the oatmeal background colour from the pattern has been used for the lamp and the pale grey flowers from the design have been matched to the wall panels, thus making the picture perfectly balanced. If you follow this rule of thumb, no matter how big your room, your scheme should feel confident and pleasing to the eye.

My article
Think clean lines, teamed with soft organic shapes on a backdrop of white; and this is the futuristic look that is becoming a firm favourite with designers around the globe. Fashion collections for Spring/Summer 2012 saw world renowned designers, dressing their models with ‘space-age’ clothes and alien inspired hairstyles, whilst architects and interior designers are having fun with white sci-fi style spaces, teamed with splashes of punchy neon.

“Futuristic Interiors continue to gain momentum as consumers interpret them as cutting-edge and ahead of competitors. Businesses that can incorporate minute elements of sci-fi style will automatically be more likely to be perceived as innovative and effective at pushing boundaries.” Armida Ascano, Trend Hunter.

One designer that is known and loved for producing this style is Pierre Paulin, with his best example being the Ribbon chair, created in 1966. A beautiful sculptural design, which takes on the appearance of a spaceship and from the 1960s to the present day, has never ceased to be modern.

At a time when everyone is watching the pennies, it is no surprise that we are embracing a refreshing and simplistic style, which is not only achievable but also affordable.

Get the look

Kitchen
For a space-age look, combine curved units in a white gloss finish with bright LED cabinet lights, a great way to illuminate and display modern kitchenware. Extra drama has been created by hanging a contemporary pendant light over the work surface.

Living room
A graphic feature wall has been created with a white cubic shelving system, a stark contrast to the soft textures of the rug. The stylish angular chairs in slate grey and mustard make a confident statement whilst adding warmth.

Wall art
Graphic furniture has been combined with a unique and innovative, colourful decorative motif concept. Each piece is bicolour (double-sided), and comes in a choice of 3 options. Whether placed on the ground, fixed to a wall (a wall fixing system is supplied with each pack) or suspended from the ceiling via 2 rails (priced separately), they produce a unique tri-dimensional effect that is reminiscent of flying saucers!

Dining room
The white furniture in futuristic shapes work well together, with wave plates and ribbon style chairs, the look has a soft fluidity about it. The lighting has been carefully considered with a delicate ceramic pendent suspended directly above the dining table.

Bathroom
The organic shape of the bathroom unit has been mirrored by this vermilion colored stool. It’s a great example of simple design with dramatic impact.

Furniture
Clean lines, geometric shapes that often take on the look of a spaceship; a good example is Ligne Rosets Pumpkin chair.

Lighting
Often made from new materials and structures, futuristic lighting has a firm place within modern interiors, lighting up and transforming any contemporary décor.

Wallpaper
Futuristic wallpaper along with graphic geometric shapes, has been trending for a few years. It looks most effective hung on one wall to create a stylish focal point. Sanderson have just launched a range called Concord, a graphic design in a range of colour options.
The bold colours of the collection scream out at you, but the simplicity and organic style of the ceramics makes the products extremely pleasing to the eye. I hope you enjoy looking at the collection as much I did.

Embracing the trend of Fluro, Dulux introduces ‘Collective Passion’ , their second collection from a series of five for 2013 . With punchy splashes of neon orange, red, pink, yellow and green, this collection is all about building on colour, much like a piece of artwork. The palette is then harmonised with pale neutrals for the floor and furniture, using polished and highly reflective materials.

It’s refreshing to see new paint techniques, which move away from painting a room with just one colour. Whilst it is still popular to create a feature wall, this is decorating on a whole new level! I love the second from last image with the grey sofa; the colours on the wall have been applied in painterly layers, this draws the eye up, and by using accessories in the same tone the look is pulled together.

To mirror this look, be creative with the application of paint, consider using panels of colour that graduate in intensity (look at the bedroom below for an example of this technique) add interest to long corridors by layering strong and fiery tones such as pink and orange. Treat your walls like a large canvas, feel free, and try to have some fun, although do plan out your colours before you begin. A good idea is to paint a scaled down version on a large piece of paper, that way you can test your scheme before you commit to painting the walls.

We are always looking for room schemes that can inspire, and help us make those all important decorating decisions. The images below are taken from the first of Dulux’s five paint trends for 2013. First up is ‘The Art of Understanding’ which sees 50′s influence from the catwalk, film and TV, all of which are set to make a big impact on interiors in 2013. Pippa Jameson Interiors first wrote about this in 2010 with our feature ‘50′s Interior Trends 2010/2011‘. We predicted that this was going to be big, and we were right.

I am a big fan of this collection, and used correctly, the colours will create character and depth. The key is layering, and using accents of colour, rather than painting a whole room in one shade, which is what we have been used to. I love the first image where just the window cils have been painted with deep pink (90RR 18/450) By doing so, they become defined and several focal points are created around the room. This technique particularly suits this loft style flat, as from above, the borders are viewed as solid blocks of colour creating a more dynamic and confident look. The pink frames are then balanced with the introduction of cushions in similar tones. The secondary colour is deep blue, which adds a striking contrast. The look has been finished with a cream highlighting colour, which lightens the scheme.

“Celebrating the aesthetics and order of the fifties reminds us of less complicated, more glamorous times” as quoted by the Dulux Trend team.

Some key words from this range are: texture, organic, blonde wood, textiles and COLOUR! I’m particularly in love with their textiles, especially the throws, #want…!

I can’t believe it’s been 3 weeks since my last post!! I have been feeling so anxious that I haven’t be able to write anything! This is the problem when a big job comes in, radio silence on the blog…Anyhow, I’m back (until the next shoot!) and wanted to share with you some of the gorgeous products from all of the Spring/Summer 2013 press shows; starting with the lovely Laura Ashley.

All of the images below are from the Bloomsbury range, a pattern originally launched in 1987 and adapted to todays trends. For me, this was the collection that stood out the most at the press show, it’s colorful, fresh and exciting and is sure to be a hit. Away with the beige and in with the colour!

As the weather becomes colder and the winter coats come out, we are all turning towards our cozy home accessories. It’s all about knitted cushions, large cable knit throws mixed with a few of your favourite things. This is exactly what we used in my last shoot for Heart Home magazine which was shot at the end of the Summer. Our main focus was texture, combining the chunky textiles, reclaimed woods with soft petrol blues; just look at the beautiful colour of the thistle! Shot on location in Camber Sands by the lovely Jo Hendesron xx

I think everyone has their own idea of what boho eclectic styling is. After all, the beauty of eclecticism is all about mixing up pieces that you love but don’t necessarily match. For a recent magazine feature I was asked to ‘recreate’ this style using a number of products of my choosing. To help me get started, I simply broke down the style in my own words, being ‘the layering of unique pieces into a cohesive look’.

Here’s what I came up with! A collection of uniquely designed pieces with a mix of pattern and textures. What kinds of things would you include in a boho eclectic styled room?

Credits: {1} Osborne and Little ‘Kenwood’ wallpaper, {2} Gubi ‘Adnet’ mirror,
{3} IKEA Stockholm cushion, {4} Have You Met Miss Jones ‘Modernica’ vase,
{5} Limited edition Spaghetti Gold table from Freedom, {6} Freedom ‘Brooklyn’ Sofa
